Cartoonist

He was born in 1960. After graduation from middle school, he worked as a government officer, a worker and a designer for decorating. Now he is a professional caricaturist. He often writes articles for many magazines. About 5100 works of caricature have been published at home and abroad.

Hou Xiaoqiang is a member of the Chinese Artists Association and the Vice Chairman of the Shandong Cartoonist Association. He has been dedicated to international cartoon competitions since 1997, and his cartoons "Family" and "The White House" both won the United Nations/Ranan Lurie International Political Cartoon Award in 2006 and 2009, respectively. The awards were presented to him by former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan and Ban Ki-moon.

Hou has twice won the highest award for Chinese animation, the Golden Monkey Award, in 2000 and 2010. 

In 1996 and 1999, he also won the People's Daily Satirical Humor Award twice. His work "Family" won first prize in the 2006 CCTV National Environmental Animation Competition. In 2006, his work "Helplessness of Houyi" won the highest award at the China International Animation Festival, the Golden Monkey Award.

In 2000, his work "Wheelchair" won the Grand Hat Prize at the 39th Knokke-Heist International Cartoon Festival in Belgium, making him the first Chinese person to receive the award. In 2004, his work "Mask" won the Bronze Crown Award at the first forum of the Russian Sorgut International Humor Art Museum, and he was invited to attend the award ceremony and humor art forum in Sorgut, Russia.

In 2005, his work "Hostage" won the first China Golden Dragon Award at the Hong Kong Asian Dragon International Cartoon Competition. 

In 2008, his work "Romantic Journey" won first prize at the UMO International Cartoon Competition in India. 

In 2009, his work "Peace" won the International Cartoon Champion at the National Museum of American Freedom. 

In 2010, his work "White House Impression" won the Grand Prize at the Columbia International Cartoon Biennial Exhibition. His work "Freedom" won the Grand Prize at the first Boston International Humor Festival, and "Oil Spill Disaster" won the Grand Prize at the Daejeon International Cartoon Image Exhibition in South Korea. 

In 2010, his work "Fear" won the first prize at the 9th Tehran International Cartoon Biennial in Iran. 

In 2011, his work "Tornado" won the first prize (honorable mention) at the Nasreddin Hodja International Cartoon Competition in Turkey. 

In 2015, his work "Untitled" won the Peace Messenger Award at the 18th Serbia International Anti-War Cartoon Salon, making him the first person in history to win the "Chinese Person" award again.

Hou has won 80 awards and has placed in the top three 23 times in international cartoon competitions in more than 20 countries from 1997 to 2023, including 12 first prizes. He has also been named one of the "Top Ten Chinese Cartoonists in International Cartoon Competitions" for five consecutive years.
